About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Provide civil legal assistance and representation to Montanans experiencing housing instability
Interview, meet with, advise, and represent eligible clients on civil legal matters
Prepare correspondence, pleadings, and other legal documents
Conduct legal research and prepare cases
Handle client contact, pleading preparation, research, file maintenance, hearings, and trials
File pleadings in local courts, including conventional and electronic filing
Investigate, examine, and analyze court, discovery, and other documents
Recruit, train, and support pro bono attorneys
Provide civil legal education to clients and community partners
Develop legal resources, educational programs, and materials concerning tenant rights and responsibilities
Collaborate with community partners, the City of Bozeman, and Bozeman Tenants United
Participate in statewide initiatives and impact work
Implement grant and contract requirements through casework
Hold regular office hours at partner agencies, on reservations, and in assigned communities
Perform other duties assigned by the Supervisor, Director of Advocacy, or Executive Director

Requirements

What you’ll need

Juris Doctor (JD) degree
Admission to the Montana Bar or ability to obtain admission
Strong legal research, writing, and advocacy skills
Commitment to serving low-income, rural, and underserved populations
Willingness to assume a varied caseload
Ability and willingness to learn and integrate new technologies and methodologies
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, the public, judges, court personnel, project partners, and colleagues
Ability to travel in Montana and outside Montana
At least three years’ experience in the practice of law preferred
Background working with housing law preferred
Understanding of civil equal-justice legal needs of low-income people preferred
Experience working collaboratively with diverse colleagues, partners, and clients preferred
Knowledge of substantive legal areas affecting low-income people preferred
Commitment to trauma-informed practices
Ability to work cooperatively and collegially with multiple timelines
High attention to detail and consistent follow-through
Skilled interpersonal communication and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
Valid driver’s license
