About the role
- Provide day-to-day advice to HR and management on employment matters including hiring, discipline, terminations, leaves of absence, accommodations, and workplace investigations
- Advise on wage and hour compliance, worker classification, and payroll practices across multiple jurisdictions
- Draft and review employment policies, handbooks, agreements, and other HR documentation to ensure legal compliance
- Advise on labor relations and collective bargaining agreement compliance
- Partner with HR and Operations teams to minimize litigation risk and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
- Manage litigation matters across all practice areas from inception through resolution, including employment disputes, auto accident claims, workers’ comp claims, commercial litigation, and consumer claims
- Draft and review pleadings, motions, discovery responses, and other litigation documents
- Handle discovery management, settlement negotiations, and trial preparation across diverse legal matters
- Represent the company in administrative proceedings and mediations
- Develop litigation strategy and oversee outside counsel relationships to ensure cost-effective case management
- Coordinate with insurance carriers and manage coverage issues for various types of claims
- Provide litigation risk assessments and strategic recommendations to leadership
- Gradually take on contract review, revision, and negotiation responsibilities across various business functions
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on legal aspects of new business initiatives and product launches
Requirements
- 4-8 years of employment law and litigation experience
- In-house legal experience at a high-growth technology or e-commerce company with significant HR advisory responsibilities (law firm and government candidates with experience working directly with HR teams are also encouraged to apply)
- Attorney in good standing in their state of bar admission
- Strong interest and aptitude for learning commercial/transactional law with eagerness to expand skill set
- Deep knowledge of federal and state employment laws, including Title VII, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, and state-specific regulations
- Experience with workplace investigations, EEOC proceedings, and state agency matters
- Comprehensive litigation experience including case strategy, discovery management, motion practice, and settlement negotiations
- Able to understand business needs and partner with your colleagues across the company to find creative solutions, with a strong understanding of the interplay between legal and business risk
