About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Direct the daily operations of the Health Information Management department
  • Maintain statistics and productivity measures and standards
  • Update policies and procedures and assist with developing new policies for regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate daily activities, oversee HIM staff development, assign duties and adjust workloads
  • Respond to workflow questions and reassign tasks as needed
  • Assist with vacation and holiday scheduling and maintain adequate coverage
  • Conduct new employee and on-the-job training
  • Educate staff on correct procedure guidelines
  • Oversee workflow and provide daily status reports to the manager when backlogs develop
  • Develop and coordinate HIM compliance education and training for documentation and coding
  • Oversee abstracting and auditing functions and handle internal and external medical-record audits
  • Validate and quality-review scanned records and maintain legal medical-record integrity
  • Assess and develop workflows to maintain efficiency
  • Investigate and resolve complex clerical, office and chart-locator problems
  • Identify scanning-error trends and communicate findings to management
  • Review medical records and deficiencies for compliance with completion rules and regulations
  • Audit electronic and manual entries and resolve discrepancies
  • Maintain complex filing systems, retrieve and locate records, file or scan information, identify duplicate records and purge old records
  • Determine document content and data to retain in physical and electronic legal medical records
  • Monitor medical-record entries for legibility, completeness and signatures
  • Maintain knowledge of coding principles, government regulations, protocols and payer requirements for coding and billing
  • Review scanned documents for accuracy, legibility and identification
  • Provide customer-service-related duties
  • Communicate with physicians and staff to clarify diagnoses or obtain additional information
  • Ensure safe care and adherence to Memorial Hermann policies, procedures and service standards
  • Support department goals and serve as a preceptor, mentor and resource
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree; equivalent combination of training and experience considered in lieu of degree
  • Eight (8) years of experience in health information management or equivalent health information management education/technical training
  • RHIT or RHIA preferred
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology
  • Strong knowledge of medical records procedures and compliance
  • Experience in document imaging, prepping or scanning
  • Good organization skills and interpersonal skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of staff
  • Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks accurately
  • Ability to work independently with good judgment within the area of responsibility
  • Working knowledge of computer systems and programs, with expertise in MS Word, Excel and Adobe products
