About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide accurate, reliable and effective education to physicians and extenders regarding outpatient procedural and diagnosis coding
- Perform individual and group documentation reviews and identify opportunities for improvement
- Assist with implementation of physician-led CME documentation and coding courses
- Coordinate with physician leadership and other resources to develop and deliver educational programming
- Provide coding expertise to educate physicians and support staff on procedures meeting billing compliance requirements
- Provide documentation and coding education virtually or in designated clinics
- Research updates for provider education materials
- Interpret changes in external regulatory environments and coding updates
- Plan and conduct ongoing training with providers and support staff
- Serve as subject matter expert on procedural coding, ICD-10 coding, regulations and documentation requirements
- Maintain project work lists and meet deadlines
- Seek physician input when required information is missing or unclear
- Maintain current outpatient coding knowledge and follow coding, regulatory and internal compliance guidelines
- Ensure safe care and adherence to Memorial Hermann policies, procedures and standards
- Support department goals and serve as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate degree required; in lieu of degree, minimum of two (2) years of progressive experience in outpatient physician documentation and Risk Adjustment
- One of the following certifications required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P), Clinical Documentation Expert (CDEO), Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRAC), Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA), or Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
- Five (5) years of progressive experience in outpatient physician documentation and Risk Adjustment
- Minimum of two (2) years specifically in a multi-specialty practice environment
- Advanced working knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCs, compliance and coding requirements
- HCC Risk Adjustment experience required
- Expertise in risk factor calculations
- Computer skills, operating systems and EMRs
- Organizational and planning skills with ability to work independently
- Observation, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, with ability to adapt style and tone according to situation and audience
- Experience in adult learning principles for adult education and training
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
