About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Review and abstract inpatient medical records
- Identify and accurately assign diagnosis, procedure, DRG, and ICD-10 codes for inpatient records
- Collect and include data elements required for federal or state reporting and billing
- Review records for diagnosis and procedure specificity and appropriate reimbursement
- Query physicians when documentation is inadequate, ambiguous, unclear, or coding assignments are not straightforward
- Keep current with coding and reimbursement reporting guidelines and escalate concerns to the manager
- Maintain 92% to 95% accuracy in ICD-10 and DRG assignment while meeting productivity standards and minimizing abstracting errors
- Follow AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding and official coding guidelines
- Adhere to Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, safety standards, productivity, quality, and budgetary requirements
- Complete mandatory/continuing education and skills competency requirements
- Support department goals and serve as a preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff
- Provide safe, caring, personalized, and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or GED required
- RHIT, RHIA, CCA, CCS, or CIC coding certification from AHIMA or AAPC required
- Three (3) years of inpatient hospital coding experience required
- Experience coding in a level 1 trauma facility/academic teaching facility strongly preferred
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM and PCS coding
- Analytical skills to interpret health-record data and assign appropriate codes
- Proficient knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and surgical terminology
- Critical thinking, good judgment, and decision-making skills
- Knowledge of coding compliance policies, official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal policies and procedures
- Proficient in navigating a Windows-based application environment
- Must be located in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, or North Carolina, or willing to relocate to an eligible state
