About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide import and customs compliance advice to mitigate risks
  • Support Global Trade Operations, global regional and operating unit lawyers, and other Medtronic functions
  • Advise on complex global trade compliance and strategic business initiatives
  • Advise on import and customs compliance activities, including country of origin, valuation, HTS classification, trade remedies, drawback, FTAs, hand carry, and customs programs such as CTPAT
  • Monitor legal and regulatory changes related to trade compliance and analyze impacts
  • Advise on compliance with global import laws, regulations, and trade-related requirements
  • Partner with legal, supply chain, trade, and compliance teams to develop standards and implement risk mitigation controls
  • Serve as the import legal and compliance subject matter expert
  • Advise on customs inquiries, protests, and post-summary corrections
  • Support global trade-related litigation, compliance investigations, and voluntary disclosures
  • Identify and mitigate global trade legal risks across Medtronic businesses
  • Collaborate on due diligence reviews for potential business development activities
  • Develop and deliver employee training on global trade compliance requirements
  • Conduct trade-related investigations and audits, develop recommendations, and support issue mitigation and resolution
  • Work globally in a matrixed environment and report to the Senior Legal Director for Global Trade, Global Operations and Supply Chain Legal

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Juris Doctor from a nationally recognized Law School
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state or the District of Columbia
  • Minimum 5+ years of legal experience advising on import laws and customs regulations
  • Experience with BAA/TAA requirements
  • Experience with forced labor compliance
  • Experience supporting M&A trade due diligence
  • Experience advising on global export controls and sanctions, including sanctioned-country licensing, restricted party screening, and anti-boycott reporting
  • Understanding of the legal and regulatory environment and business risk considerations for a life sciences company
  • Experience in contracting, particularly in transportation and logistics or general procurement
  • Experience in the healthcare or medical device industry
  • Experience with change management and process improvement initiatives, such as Lean Six Sigma
  • Project or program management experience
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Highest level of integrity and professionalism
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, presentation, and written communication skills
  • For baccalaureate degrees earned outside the United States, a degree satisfying 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required
  • U.S. work authorization requirements apply; Principal-level roles may be eligible for sponsorship
