About the role

  • Formula review: Review sterile and non-sterile formulations in accordance with client requests.
  • Assess client requests to ensure safety, therapeutic effectiveness, clinical justification, suitability of the requested route of administration, active ingredient concentration, dosage, and relevance to the clinical diagnosis provided by the preparer.
  • Ensure formulations are evidence-based by conducting primary literature research.
  • Verify physicochemical compatibility, suitability, and stability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and excipients within the formulation.
  • Verify mathematical calculations, detailed preparation steps, ingredient sensitivities, auxiliary labeling, legal parameters, etc.
  • Respond to client inquiries: Receive, interpret, and respond to questions about compounded preparations via email or phone.
  • Provide technical expertise to resolve day-to-day compounding issues.
  • Provide assistance with mathematical calculations, selection of bases, incompatibilities and suitability of ingredients, formulation chemistry, API-specific monographs, etc.
  • Understand and advise on technologies, devices, equipment, and proprietary ready-to-use bases recommended or exclusive for pharmaceutical compounding.
  • Provide consultative support regarding specific practice niches, current standards of practice, regulatory requirements, facility workflow, etc.
  • Respond to client inquiries, issues, or situations.
  • Conduct literature searches to address internal and external requests and compile the findings into a standardized template for distribution to clients.
  • Stay current with standards of practice and regulations governing compounding at national, provincial, and federal levels.
  • Assist in the development of SOPs, policies, and procedures related to formulation development and approval.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or related scientific degree.
  • Pharmacist: Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in compounding (at least one (1) year of experience in a specialized compounding pharmacy laboratory is an asset).
  • Pharmacy Technician: At least ten (10) years of experience in compounding (experience in a specialized compounding pharmacy laboratory is an asset).
  • Knowledge of regulations and guidelines from organizations such as USP, NAPRA, FDA, Health Canada, and national/provincial pharmacy boards is considered an asset.
  • Experience in training and/or teaching pharmacists and laboratory technicians is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, and Excel) required.
  • Excellent communication skills; fluency in French and English (spoken and written) required.
  • Strong work ethic, sound judgment, empathy, and discretion in professional conduct.
  • Excellent time management, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to maintain a professional, positive image.
  • Results-oriented, proactive, and able to learn and adapt quickly.
  • Proven ability to exercise discretion, ethical judgment, and sound decision-making.
