About the role

  • The Assistant Attorney General will investigate and prosecute crimes that harm the Commonwealth’s natural resources or pose a significant threat of harm to human health or the environment.
  • ECSF is an interagency team that includes prosecutors from the Attorney General’s Office, detectives from the Massachusetts Environmental Police, and investigators, engineers, and attorneys from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
  • ECSF partners meet regularly to evaluate whether enforcement against particular environmental violators should be handled administratively, civilly, or criminally.
  • The most egregious violations are referred for criminal prosecution.
  • The Assistant Attorney General will assume an existing caseload of substantive prosecutions and investigations, as well as responsibility for handling new assignments that include initial review of allegations, formal grand jury investigations, and criminal prosecutions up to, and including, trial.

Requirements

  • Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of substantive litigation experience, including trials, motion practice, discovery practice, other pre-trial litigation, grand jury practice, and/or deposition practice.
  • Experience in criminal law, as either a prosecutor or defense attorney, is highly desirable.
  • Experience in environmental law, is preferred, although not required.
  • Ability to handle multiple complex criminal matters and to represent the Commonwealth effectively in court and with the public.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and courtroom skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a small team, as well as independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • A valid driver’s license is required, as travel is necessary to various courts across Massachusetts.
  • The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve and an interest in supporting a respectful and inclusive work environment.
