Director

• In collaboration with the Chief of Public Affairs and the team’s other Director of Government Affairs, lead the development of MCPSA’s advocacy agenda, aligned with the organization’s strategic plan.
• Develop and implement strategies to build support for Massachusetts charter public schools and the Association’s advocacy priorities, enabling achievement of both offensive and defensive goals in both the immediate term and the longer-term.
• Draft legislative language relevant to MCPSA’s advocacy agenda, including bill and amendment proposals, fact sheets, calls to action, bill summaries and policy briefs, regulatory comments, analyses, and presentations.
• Maintain active, working knowledge of Massachusetts charter public school laws and regulations.
• Monitor, analyze, and report on state-level legislation affecting charter public schools, and recommend positions for MCPSA to take on relevant legislation.
• Liaise with national partners to monitor national legislation and recommend MCPSA’s position and advocacy strategy, when appropriate.
• Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key legislators, policymakers, and their staff, serving as a lobbyist and one of MCPSA’s key points of contact with elected decision-makers on all policy matters.
• Plan and execute legislative meetings and meetings with candidates for elected office, leveraging other members of the team and member schools as appropriate.
• Ensure effective communication about policy matters with member schools. Collaborate with other members of the Public Affairs team to lead the Charters SPEAK community of practice, MCPSA’s community of practice for school-based communications and advocacy leaders.
• Develop training sessions and resources to equip schools and their stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively engage key legislators and build support for MCPSA’s advocacy agenda.
• In partnership with the Director of Community Mobilization, identify and facilitate high-impact opportunities to engage charter public school stakeholders as advocates for key legislative priorities, including calls-to-action, lobbying days, campaign events, and other events to build constituent relationships with individual candidates and legislators.
• Manage the use of legislative tracking tools across the Public Affairs team.
• Manage and effectively partner with MCPSA’s contract lobbyists.
• Support the execution of events designed to further political strategy.
• Effectively partner with other advocacy groups as appropriate.
• Participate in legislative coalitions as necessary to achieve policy outcomes.
• Represent MCPSA on policy working groups, task forces and working committees, and at special events.
• Other activities, as requested by the Chief of Public Affairs.

Director of Government Affairs

Manager

• Serve as an operational liaison between MCPSA and key partners, including legislative offices and candidates for elected office. Proactively schedule and confirm meetings with legislators and candidates; manage related logistics, maintain up-to-date calendars, and provide background information and data to prepare internal team members for these meetings.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all state-wide or legislative electoral candidates. Conduct ongoing research and provide Advocates for Massachusetts Charter Public Schools with clean, organized data to inform strategic engagement.
• Provide operational support for Advocates for Massachusetts Charter Public Schools political fundraisers, including sending invitations to events, tracking responses and donations, and proactively conducting follow-up to ensure achievement of attendance and fundraising goals.
• Manage logistics for core Public Affairs programs and events, including sending meeting invitations, tracking attendance, and developing operational plans that ensure seamless operation of both virtual and in-person events.
• Support MCPSA’s community of practice for school-based public affairs professionals by maintaining accurate membership records, taking detailed notes during weekly meetings, tracking member engagement and providing regular reports to the team, and updating core member resources.
• Input finalized content into MCPSA’s email platform. Ensure proper formatting, layout, and functionality across devices. Perform final checks for visual quality and consistency. Coordinate with team members to schedule and bulk send emails, ensuring timely and accurate delivery.
• Utilizing provided material, create and thoroughly test advocacy actions in MCPSA’s advocacy platform (Quorum) to enable charter public school supporters to advocate directly to their elected officials.
• Monitor earned media coverage of Massachusetts charter public schools and maintain organized records of all mentions.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date stakeholder data in MCPSA’s CRM (Quorum).
• Other activities, as requested by the Chief of Public Affairs.

Public Affairs Manager

• Partner with regional school leaders to project manage initiatives from ideation through completion, including developing tools and systems to meet member needs, and organizing, planning, scheduling, facilitating, and documenting regular Alliance and subcommittee meetings.
• Plan and execute all statewide Community of Practice professional development meetings.
• Collaborate with the Public Affairs team to support regional advocacy objectives as needed.
• Implement high-priority strategic initiatives in collaboration with consultants and school leaders, including strengthening school enrollment and fundraising systems and updating and enhancing operational guides.
• Manage peer-to-peer listserv facilitation.
• Project manage and implement special projects connected to Regional Alliances and Communities of Practice, such as the annual compensation survey and the Boston Charter Application.
• Assume responsibility for and implement improvements to the MCPSA Knowledge Center.
• Provide technical support to leaders and school staff engaged by the statewide Community of Practice programs, in partnership with the Chief of School Supports.
• All other projects, activities, and tasks as assigned by the Chief of School Supports.
