About the role
- Own full people responsibility for ~10 engineers across multiple stream-aligned teams, including one-on-ones, feedback, performance cycles, career development, retention, succession, and internal mobility.
- Coach engineers across all levels (Working Student/Intern to Principal), fostering growth in skills, scope, and impact while building a culture of trust, psychological safety, accountability, and clear expectations.
- Partner closely with Lead Software Engineers who own technical direction and architecture; stay out of “what” decisions and enable the “how well” by improving clarity, collaboration, staffing, and overall system health.
- Measure and improve engineering effectiveness using a balanced set of indicators (e.g., DORA metrics, cycle time, throughput, WIP, sprint predictability, incident load, escaped defects, operational toil) without gaming metrics.
- Actively shape delivery health and developer experience by driving meaningful retrospectives, thorough incident follow-ups, better cross-team collaboration, and removing recurring blockers to improve flow and performance.
- Own hiring end-to-end within your scope: define needs with Leads, run structured interviews, make confident decisions, ensure strong onboarding and fast, sustainable ramp-up, and translate company goals into realistic capacity and execution plans.
Requirements
- Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or a senior Tech Lead ready to fully step into people leadership, ideally within a product-driven scale-up environment.
- Strong passion for people leadership: coaching, structured feedback, performance management, hiring, conflict resolution, motivation, and developing high-performing teams.
- Deep understanding of agile and lean delivery principles, with the ability to improve effectiveness and reliability pragmatically using meaningful metrics.
- Solid technical foundation in modern SaaS environments (CI/CD, production operations, service architecture) enabling you to credibly spar with engineers and Leads on delivery risks and quality without owning architectural decisions.
- Ability to translate company objectives into staffing, capacity planning, and realistic delivery commitments while protecting team focus and managing stakeholder expectations.
- Clear, direct, and trust-building communicator, fluent in English (German optional), with a collaborative startup mindset and strong cross-functional alignment skills.
