About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct quality reviews of outpatient coding
  • Assure coding compliance with federal regulations
  • Maintain up-to-date coding guidelines and coding policy changes
  • Review, interpret, and assign diagnostic and procedural codes based on medical record documentation
  • Apply correct coding principles
  • Resolve coding edits and code complex outpatient encounters
  • Assist in mentoring and training new coders on workflows and applications
  • Preserve the confidential nature of information
  • Support and maintain UT Health San Antonio policies, protocols, and values
  • Work under the general supervision of the Coding Operations Manager in a hospital setting

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in medical records abstraction and coding in an acute care setting is required
  • HS Diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of Official Guidelines for coding and reporting
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, physiology and pharmacology
  • Knowledge of disease pathology
  • Knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology coding (CPT), ICD-10-CM, and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS)
  • Ability to code surgical and observation patient encounters
  • Ability to operate ordinary business equipment such as computers, keyboards, and telephones
  • Ability to navigate common office software, coding software, billing software, and abstracting systems
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using coding resources
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic technical issues
  • Hospital experience with Infusion, Surgery, Observation Surgery, Surgical Spine competencies, Interventional experience, and back-end edit resolution preferred
  • EPIC and 3M encoder software experience preferred
