About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assist the Chief Underwriter and Associate Chief Underwriter in identifying new areas of potential risk.
- Have a complete understanding of all current underwriting guidelines and practices, to include global standards.
- Dissect and identify new risks and establish clear pathway in developing new Controls.
- Evaluate the results of Controls testing and identify any trends for training purposes.
- Evaluate and identify potential risk in the underwriting environment.
- Maintain current knowledge of industry trends practices.
- Stay on top of an ever-changing regulatory environment.
- Adapt to Innovation.
- Ensure that Underwriting Management team receives necessary information.
- Establish strong working relationship with other departments of the company.
- Communicate with senior leaders.
- Execute on company goals, both short and long term.
- Participate in and provide leadership in the Underwriting Department People management.
- Be a knowledge resource for underwriters at all levels.
- Understand and execute on Corporate responsibilities.
- Ensure team members are trained and have a clear understanding of objectives and expectations.
- Actively participate in the development, implementation and management of Risk management staff.
- Champion Change Management principles within the Risk Management team.
- Maintain positive work environment for team members.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Post-secondary education or equivalent work experience
- Minimum 15 years underwriting experience
- Minimum 5 years Underwriting Risk Management experience
- Expert knowledge and understanding of medical, non-medical and financial underwriting principles and practices
- In depth knowledge of unique estate, business and insurance planning tools and techniques
- In depth knowledge of current political, economic, financial and legislative events impacting risk
- Expert knowledge of company’s insurance product portfolio
- Expert knowledge of reinsurance, marketplace treaties, agreements and available capacity
- Exceptional priority management with ability to work effectively under deadlines
- Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective presentation skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong creative and critical thinking skills
- Expert knowledge of insurance contract law and state legislative requirements as they relate to the underwriting and issue of insurance contracts
- High level understanding of the principles of product pricing
