About the role
- Act for clients on a broad spectrum of residential property transactions from instruction through to completion and post-completion matters, maintaining high standards of service and timely progression of cases.
- Provide clear, pragmatic legal advice to clients, explaining technical issues in plain English and setting realistic expectations throughout the transaction.
- Carry out and oversee client identity checks and anti‑money laundering (AML) compliance, ensuring robust audit trails and maintenance of accurate, audit‑ready case files in line with firm procedures.
- Prepare, review and negotiate standard documentation including contract packs, transfers, variations, leases, and ensure Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) returns and other statutory filings are completed accurately and on time.
- Prepare and check completion statements, manage client account transactions and disbursement requests, and contribute to billing and fee recovery processes in accordance with firm policies.
- Liaise professionally with clients, estate agents, mortgage lenders, surveyors, HM Land Registry, local authorities and other third parties to obtain documentation, resolve issues and progress matters efficiently.
- Maintain and update electronic case files, recording clear case notes, milestones and actions, and support file reviews to demonstrate compliance and best practice.
- Supervise, mentor and provide practical support to junior fee earners and legal assistants, contributing to induction, training and development activities within the team.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and precedents, support the adoption of conveyancing technology and workflow improvements, and contribute to business development and client retention initiatives.
Requirements
- Qualified solicitor (or equivalent) with demonstrable experience in residential conveyancing within a law firm or conveyancing practice, handling a range of transaction types.
- Strong technical knowledge of residential property law including HM Land Registry practice, leasehold transactions, SDLT and related statutory requirements.
- Sound understanding of AML and client identification requirements with experience maintaining compliant, audit‑ready files.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage a busy caseload, prioritise effectively and meet deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
- Confident and professional communicator with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with clients, colleagues and third parties.
- Proactive, commercially aware and solutions‑focused, with a commitment to continuous professional development and to supporting team improvements.
