About the role
- Provide senior level expertise in audit engagements that span multiple portfolios and assess associated risks and controls
- Stay abreast of best practices, industry developments, and emerging risks and consult with audit teams
- Participate in execution of complex, highly visible audit procedures in a risk-focused manner while maintaining independence and professional standards
- Analyze audit findings requiring complex judgment and propose pragmatic solutions for final audit reports
- Drive audit teams in planning and execution of validation procedures for Internal Audit and Regulatory issues
- Organize and complete work within established budgets and time frames with minimal direction
- Incorporate the use of data analytics throughout all phases of the audit process
- Coach and mentor junior audit team members
- Proactively communicate audit status and issues to senior management and business stakeholders
- Adhere to compliance/operational risk controls and maintain M&T internal control standards
- Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflect the M&T Bank brand
- Deliver timely, high-quality, value-added audit reports meeting Audit Committee and regulatory expectations
- Periodically interact with external regulatory agencies and external auditors
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in Accounting, Business, Finance, Technology, Cybersecurity, Mathematics, Statistics or other related technical field
- 7 years of relevant experience, inclusive of 2 years of work leadership experience
- In lieu of degree: combined minimum of 11 years higher education and/or work experience including 7 years relevant work experience and 2 years leadership experience
- Strong judgment, political astuteness, and sensitivity to cultural commitment
- Strong project management and interpersonal skills; initiative and critical thinking
- Specific subject matter expertise in internal audit disciplines or LOBs (Commercial Banking, Retail Banking, Mortgage, Consumer Banking, Wealth Advisory, Institutional Client Services) or support functions (Treasury, Finance, Compliance, Technology, Operations, Risk Management, Credit Administration)
- Effective negotiation skills and proactive, 'no surprises' communication approach
- Articulate and effective communicator, both orally and in writing; energetic, charismatic and approachable
- Related certifications preferred (CPA, CIA, CISA or similar)
- MBA or Master’s degree preferred
- Financial Services industry experience preferred
