About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) on a long-term contract
- Implement intuitive, accessible, and responsive web interfaces communicating critical space weather information
- Contribute to modernization of SWPC’s web presence and Testbed applications
- Work with Web and Testbed teams and Technology Division developers
- Translate scientific and operational requirements into clean, user-centered designs
- Design user-friendly responsive interfaces for web applications and product delivery systems
- Assist with wireframes, mockups, and prototypes based on stakeholder input and usability goals
- Modernize legacy applications using Vue, React, and Svelte
- Build data-rich interfaces with strong attention to user experience
- Integrate generative AI and machine-learning features into client-facing scheduling and decision-making tools
- Design and modernize back-end systems using Java, Python, and Node.js
- Develop RESTful APIs using Python and Django
- Work with Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB
- Build and maintain ETL pipelines and services using Prefect
- Deploy applications to dedicated servers using Docker
- Manage and evolve software architecture for efficiency, scalability, and performance
- Organize and manage projects, including scope, budget, and deadlines
- Lead developers and provide technical direction and code/QA review
- Meet with clients and stakeholders to align on project goals
- Assess stakeholder needs and translate them into actionable Agile/Scrum requirements
- Test and QA other developers’ work
- Write automated test scripts with Selenium and Playwright
- Debug and continuously improve application architecture
- Design and build demo applications and performance-based campaigns showcasing product capabilities
Requirements
What you’ll need- At least a Master’s degree in atmospheric science, space physics, geophysics, engineering, computer science, graphic design, human-computer interaction, or mathematics from an accredited institution
- At least 8 years of experience in related areas
- Proven experience as a Full-Stack Developer, with prior experience in a senior or lead capacity
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, React, and Svelte
- Solid back-end development experience with Java, Python, and Node.js
- Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, including Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB
- Hands-on experience with Docker for deployment
- Experience with automated testing tools such as Selenium and Playwright
- Familiarity with ETL processes and tools such as Prefect
- Experience integrating AI/ML features into production applications
- Strong project management skills, with Agile/Scrum experience
- Excellent client-facing communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a development team
- Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder to qualify
- U.S. Citizens must have lived in the U.S. for 3–5 years prior to application
- Desired: exposure to Drupal or similar CMS platforms
- Desired: basic understanding of user research methods such as surveys, user interviews, or A/B testing
- Desired: interest or coursework in space science, atmospheric physics, or scientific visualization
- Desired: familiarity with web API integration and browser-based scientific data visualization
- Desired: experience with Git or other version control systems
- Ability to communicate design intent and usability rationale effectively to technical and non-technical audiences
