About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Build, theme, and maintain scalable front-end components within Drupal 10
- Translate design comps into responsive web environments
- Partner with backend scientific developers to integrate UI components, interactive dashboards, and visual tools with data streams and web services
- Develop clean, modern, reusable front-end assets using modern web standards and Drupal theme frameworks
- Craft accessible, mobile-first user flows for space weather maps, charts, and forecasts
- Align interfaces with federal Section 508 and WCAG standards
- Test and optimize interfaces across major browsers, devices, and viewports
- Support the research-to-operations process by integrating new models, data sources, and processing workflows into operational test environments
- Build and refine interfaces for spaceweather.gov and testbed.spaceweather.gov
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Web Engineering, Interactive Design, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of dedicated web development and UI/UX front-end engineering experience
- Demonstrated experience custom-theming and building front-end components in Drupal 10
- Experience with Twig, custom layouts, and Drupal Render API
- High proficiency in HTML5, CSS3/SASS, JavaScript (ES6+), and modern CSS layouts including Flexbox and CSS Grid
- Strong eye for visual detail and commitment to polished, high-quality user interfaces
- Proficiency with Git and standard collaborative development workflows
- Experience with data visualizations or mapping interfaces for scientific, meteorological, or geospatial applications is preferred
- Familiarity with Leaflet, OpenLayers, Chart.js, or D3.js is preferred
- Hands-on experience with Federal Section 508 web accessibility compliance and testing tools is preferred
- Familiarity with Docker, DDEV, or Lando is preferred
- Experience collaborating with scientific, engineering, or research teams in an Agile environment is preferred
