About the role

  • Serve as technical lead for contractor-conducted research projects in fish ecophysiology and behavior
  • Lead the design and execution of advanced experiments assessing auditory thresholds and behavioral responses in marine fish species
  • Lead multi-year research initiatives and develop grant proposals
  • Plan and execute laboratory experiments using ABR and respirometry; collect physiological, behavioral, histopathological, and acoustic data
  • Conduct water quality monitoring, animal care, and tank maintenance
  • Process and analyze acoustic and metabolic data using software like Biosig and Loligo; calculate metrics and perform QA/QC
  • Prepare audiograms, tables, figures, monthly progress and technical reports, and updated SOPs and metadata
  • Publish peer-reviewed manuscripts and present at scientific conferences and NOAA briefings
  • Supervise and mentor junior contractor staff, interns, and volunteers
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders and contribute to fisheries management and conservation outcomes

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Marine Science, Physiology, Neuroscience, or related field
  • 5+ years of relevant research experience post-degree
  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental design, acoustic physiology, and statistical analysis
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience with fish tagging techniques and marine animal care
  • Experience with Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) using Tucker-Davis Systems
  • Experience with respirometry equipment (Loligo Systems) and Biosig/Loligo software
  • Ability to calculate metabolic rates, ABR thresholds, and acoustic metrics (sound pressure/particle motion)
  • Experience conducting water quality monitoring, animal care, and tank maintenance
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work irregular hours, including weekends
  • Ability and willingness to work indoors/outdoors
  • Valid U.S. driver's license
  • Completion of required NOAA training (safety, IT security, harassment prevention) – can be completed after start
  • Supervisory and mentoring experience for junior staff, interns, and volunteers
