About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support and manage enterprise VMware ESX-based Infrastructure-as-a-Service capabilities on-premises and in Microsoft Azure
  • Maintain system stability and high availability for critical workloads
  • Automate operational tasks using AI-powered coding and automation tools
  • Maintain critical infrastructure components across multi-datacenter stretch clusters
  • Implement solutions that improve infrastructure availability and reliability
  • Improve observability and develop repeatable operational patterns and architectural designs to help prevent outages
  • Provide mentorship and direction to global Lilly operations and platform infrastructure SMEs
  • Drive adoption of AIOps, event-driven automation, and robust observability
  • Accelerate infrastructure AIOps automation, cloud IaaS management, and cloud infrastructure as code initiatives
  • Transform operations processes through proactive, predictive, and automated AI and observability capabilities
  • Identify technology opportunities and advance Lilly’s AIOps journey
  • Optimize, configure, and maintain private cloud infrastructure capabilities
  • Lead deployment of enterprise-grade infrastructure solutions at multiple global locations
  • Lead operations of a global large-scale ESX infrastructure service

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related technical field
  • 4+ years of experience as a VMware ESX / Platform Engineer
  • Demonstrated experience or exposure to AI-enabled automation tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar
  • Authorization to work full-time in the United States; Lilly will not sponsor work authorization or visas
  • Technical expertise and leadership to turn ideas into solutions
  • Experience supporting enterprise-grade infrastructure solutions and leading deployments at multiple global locations
  • Strong hands-on experience with automated infrastructure availability and resiliency, including VMware/vSphere and storage replication, at enterprise scale
  • Experience with virtualized Windows or Linux operating systems
  • Knowledge of modern VMware ESX, Azure VMware Service, IaaS cloud services such as EC2 and Azure Compute, and tools/languages including Python, JSON, YAML, ARM, and Git
  • Ability to optimize, configure, and maintain private cloud infrastructure
  • Track record of high-quality, agile, team-based solution delivery
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills across global and diverse teams
  • Deep understanding of networking concepts such as VLANs and trunking
  • Prior experience configuring and leading VMware networking components, including Distributed Switches (vDS)
  • Experience with Zerto and VMware HCX technologies is a plus
  • Experience leading operations of a global large-scale ESX infrastructure service
  • Ability to work the stated shift schedule and rotating Monday-to-Friday / Thursday-to-Monday shifts
  • Less than 5% travel
