About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Apply advanced-level knowledge of surety claims to manage a caseload of varying size and scope across Canada, the United States and other jurisdictions.
  • Investigate, assess, negotiate and resolve claims in a fair and efficient manner.
  • Implement recovery strategies and collection actions for claims through settlements and payments while ensuring client satisfaction and meeting claims loss-ratio targets.
  • Provide claims advice and take actions that affect the rights, privileges and obligations of the Company and its clients, while upholding high standards of legal and commercial ethics and professional responsibility.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor of Civil Law (LL.B.) and active member of the Barreau du Québec OR hold a valid License as an Expert in Commercial Property & Casualty Claims issued by the AMF (Autorité des marchés financiers).
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills in French and English — bilingualism required.
  • 5+ years of legal or claims experience in one or more of the following areas: surety, construction law, commercial litigation, insolvency/restructuring, contract law or insurance law.
  • Experience in surety claims and claims-related litigation is an asset.
  • Knowledge of surety instruments, including their structure, terms and conditions, is an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to review and interpret contracts, financial data and legal obligations.
  • Strong legal drafting, research and document review skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to balance competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Team player with a proven ability to collaborate with colleagues, management and clients.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience managing or collaborating with external counsel, consultants or other professionals is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. insurance regulation or construction industry practices is an asset.
  • Experience with recovery actions, subrogation or indemnification is an asset.
