About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Provide students with disabilities appropriate learning activities and experiences to support educational progress, especially emotional and social skills
Develop modified curricula and instructional materials for students' ability levels
Collaborate with parents and staff to develop Individualized Education Programs through the ARD/IEP Committee process
Develop and implement IEP-aligned lesson plans and accommodations
Use technology, including assistive technology, in teaching and learning
Participate regularly in ARD/IEP committee meetings
Plan and supervise teaching assistant assignments
Assess student achievement through formal and informal testing
Provide or supervise personal, medical, and feeding care as stated in IEPs
Help students develop independence, advocacy, and emotional regulation skills
Supervise extracurricular activities as assigned
Create a classroom environment appropriate for students' physical, social, and emotional development
Implement positive behavioral supports and student restraint as a last resort for safety
Communicate with parents, students, service providers, principals, and teachers
Maintain required records and reports for District and TEA compliance
Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and staff committees
Supervise assigned teaching assistants

Requirements

What you’ll need

Valid Texas teaching certificate for Special Education
Elementary certification: Elem Self Contained 1–8 or Generalist/Core EC–6
Middle school certification: Generalist/Core 4–8
High school certification: Core Content Special Education
Ability to effectively instruct students and manage behavior
Ability to work with students with severe and/or multiple impairments
Knowledge and experience working with students with emotional and behavioral challenges preferred
Physical capability to implement student restraint as a last resort for safety
Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
Ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, push, pull, lift, transfer students to and from wheelchairs, and assist with positioning students with physical disabilities
Ability to comply with federal, state, District, and school regulations and policies
Ability to maintain student and adult health, safety, and confidentiality
