About the role
- Handle on-demand telephone interpreting sessions between Navajo and English speakers.
- Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.
- Process information quickly, concisely and recognize sensitive cultural differences.
- Maintain professionalism and remain calm during emotional or emergency calls (including 911).
- Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours and follow client instructions and protocol.
- Understand protocol and terminology for various industries (Healthcare, Government, Insurance, Financial, Utilities, Travel & Hospitality, General Business, Law Enforcement, Court, 911).
- Provide verbal interpretation only (no written translation) and may remain on long calls or handle high call volumes.
- Ensure a quiet & secure home-office environment to perform duties.
Requirements
- Fluency in Navajo and English and skilled in the associated cultural dynamics.
- Ability to provide cultural competency and assess regional and accent differences.
- Excellent listening, retention and note-taking skills.
- Ability to concentrate, stay detached, remain neutral and objective at all times.
- Ability to remain on calls that involve sensitive subjects (end of life, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, sexual orientation/gender expression).
- Education or work experience in language-related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation preferred.
- Must be able to adapt to LLS technology enhancements.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States; applicants must have work authorization that does not require sponsorship.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Candidates currently employed by a client of LanguageLine Solutions or an affiliated LanguageLine Solutions business may not be eligible.
- Ability to read and write the requested languages - highly preferred.
- Post-offer, pre-employment background check and/or drug screen may be required based on location.
- Technical requirements: dedicated personal device (desktop/laptop/tablet/smartphone) with Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, iPadOS or Android; restricted brands: Kaspersky products, Huawei hardware.
- High speed Internet (download ≥5 Mbps, upload ≥3 Mbps, Ping ≤300 ms, Jitter ≤30 ms).
- Access to a quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
- Physical requirements: operate keyboard and mouse, remain stationary majority of workday, sufficient manual dexterity to type or write, able to lift up to 26 lbs, may be exposed to moderate noise levels.
