About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • The successful candidate will be covering maternity leave for a highly valued member of the team.
  • The period of cover will extend until 16th April 2027.
  • The position available is a fixed-term contract.
  • You will be a highly valued addition to the team, creating greater capacity to work on more projects.
  • Join us on the journey of working with some of the most interesting and worthwhile subject matter around.
  • Bright White’s office is based in York, with the possibility of working remotely within England, Scotland, or Wales.
  • Work involves site visitation - you must be prepared to travel to visit sites, typically 2 or 3 times per month.
  • On occasion, work is outside the UK, for example in the EU. You must be willing to travel for short site visits and client meetings.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Have 5 or more years experience in a mid-level interpretive designer role, with 3D design as a minimum core skill.
  • Have a passion for developing projects through the design stages.
  • Have good experience of working with sub-contracted makers and producers.
  • Be comfortable working in innovative design environments with communities, such as co-imagination, co-creation.
  • Have worked on medium-to-large scale projects (£1m+) servicing regional, national or international organisations.
  • Have a solid understanding of the design process and creative project management.
  • Have worked with cultural sector clients or sectors with storytelling needs.
  • Have at least a bachelors degree.
  • Be a true team player.
  • Have demonstrable experience of supporting major project teams.
  • Be comfortable contributing to pitches for new work, and responding to design briefs and challenges.
  • Be comfortable working with external subject matter experts.
  • Be comfortable working to art direction for projects.
  • Be comfortable working on multiple projects in parallel.
  • Be comfortable contributing to the production of design stage documentation.
  • Be comfortable designing for any medium, in a cross and trans-media manner.
  • Be client facing sometimes, working with one of our senior in-house design team and interfacing with senior interpretation officers and CEOs.
  • Strong RIBA3-5 design skills.
  • Be proficient with (or willing to quickly translate over to) VectorWorks.
  • Be familiar with a wide variety of display construction techniques and materials.
  • **It would be beneficial for you to have the following, but not essential:**
  • Membership of Association for Heritage Interpretation or a similar professional body.
  • Familiarity with remote collaboration tools.
  • Experience of graphic design.
