About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Define technical strategy for the Player Platform area with the Director of Player Platform and Associate Technical Directors
- Translate strategy into actionable objectives and key results with Lead Engineers
- Guide architecture and evolution across payments, subscriptions, accounts, identity, web and launcher systems
- Own engineering principles and standards and report exceptions to senior leadership
- Grow Lead Engineers and their teams through coaching, mentoring, feedback and objectives
- Partner with product and business leaders to translate vision into technical options and explain trade-offs and risks
- Own technology lifecycle from evaluation and procurement through operation, modernisation and decommissioning
- Maintain budget accountability for SaaS platforms and outsourced capacity
- Manage outsourced engineering partners and hold them accountable for technical quality and delivery
- Serve as domain technology expert and champion quality across web, test, backend and cloud infrastructure
- Ensure knowledge sharing and avoid single-person dependencies
Requirements
What you’ll need- Significant experience leading multiple engineering teams delivering and operating complex, business-critical software systems
- Accountability for priorities, dependencies, risks, resources, budgets and delivery outcomes
- Experience in enterprise or large-scale platform environments particularly relevant
- Proven experience managing and developing senior technical leaders
- Experience with performance management, succession, workforce planning and raising engineering capability
- Strong track record defining technical strategy and establishing and evolving engineering standards
- Experience translating strategic direction into clear, measurable technical objectives
- Experience guiding architecture and evolution of complex systems alongside legacy platforms
- Experience owning technology through evaluation, procurement, modernisation and decommissioning
- Expert technical knowledge in a relevant engineering domain
- Recent proximity to hands-on engineering
- Strong working knowledge of Java and Spring Boot, TypeScript and React, AWS with EKS and Kubernetes, Terraform, event-driven systems and microservices
- Ability to communicate technical options, trade-offs and risks clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience managing external engineering partners or suppliers
- Games industry experience is not required
