About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Maximize profitable new and renewal underwriting opportunities using business relationships, product knowledge, and underwriting expertise
- Develop and maintain target account lists tracking prospects, account rounding, and missed opportunities
- Manage financial performance for assigned products and territory, including loss ratios, premium plans, retention, rate/exposure increases, and commissions
- Underwrite a book of business and manage underwriting quality and book performance
- Execute underwriting strategy, portfolio management, self-audits, and documented underwriting approvals
- Ensure compliance with standards and assigned underwriting authorities
- Analyze exposures and key coverage issues
- Make decisions to accept, decline, or modify complex specialty risks within the highest authority levels
- Implement underwriting decisions in compliance with state laws
- Build relationships with producers to achieve mutual growth and profitability goals
- Identify coverage or service gaps to retain or obtain customers
- Partner with claims, actuarial, and risk control departments to service producers and accounts
- Travel regularly to key producers and accounts and remain visible in the marketplace
- Analyze agency needs and trends and implement proactive business strategies
- Communicate underwriting appetite and generate qualified business
- Monitor agency action plans and participate in agency planning and marketing meetings
- Gather and analyze competitor information and producer-specific business reports to support rate reviews
- Recommend marketing, pricing, product, and system improvements
- Apply knowledge of competitive, regulatory, and legal environments
- Provide consultation to other company businesses and home office staff and participate in projects and committees
- Represent the company at industry events as a subject matter expert
- Mentor and coach less experienced underwriters
- Develop and lead technical training and guide other departments
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- 7–10 years of progressively responsible Inland Marine underwriting experience
- Professional insurance designation preferred: AICPCU or RPLU
- Ability to underwrite complex specialty accounts within the highest underwriting authority levels
- Strong understanding of exposures and key coverage issues
- Knowledge of competitive, regulatory, and legal environments
- Ability to implement underwriting decisions in compliance with state laws
- Ability to analyze financial performance, loss ratios, premium plans, retention, rates, and exposure increases
- Ability to develop and maintain producer and agency relationships
- Ability to analyze competitor information and producer-specific reports
- Ability to provide technical training, mentoring, and subject matter expertise
- Regular travel to key producers and accounts
