About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Review clinical documentation to support accurate and timely charge entry in the billing system according to payor requirements
  • Monitor missing or delayed charges and support timely submission within payor filing limits
  • Submit insurance claims and monitor claim status
  • Identify and correct claim errors, rejections, and denials
  • Investigate, correct, resubmit, and follow up on denied claims
  • Identify billing denial trends and contribute observations to improve clean claim rates and reimbursement outcomes
  • Serve as a billing point of contact for families, explaining insurance processing, copays, deductibles, and balances
  • Assist with self-pay billing, patient statement cycles, and individualized payment plans
  • Support accounts receivable monitoring through reporting, reconciliation, and audit activities
  • Use billing and financial reports to manage daily workflows and prioritize follow-up tasks
  • Partner with Patient Experience, Authorization & Eligibility, and clinical teams to resolve coverage questions and support billing education
  • Maintain accurate patient accounting records while adhering to HIPAA and data privacy policies
  • Support billing audits and process-improvement projects

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 1–3 years of healthcare billing experience; behavioral health or telehealth experience strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration, or a related field preferred
  • Working knowledge of insurance payor policies, billing guidelines, and claims submission requirements
  • Familiarity with CPT and ICD-10 codes and their impact on billing and reimbursement
  • Experience with billing platforms; Mahler, Apero, or similar RCM software preferred
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace or Microsoft Office, particularly spreadsheets
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization; ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including explaining complex insurance concepts to families
  • Ability to work independently while seeking guidance when needed
  • Collaborative, customer-service-oriented approach when supporting patients and families
  • Previous medical billing or coding experience preferred
  • Behavioral health billing background preferred
  • Startup or entrepreneurial experience preferred
  • Experience running billing and claims reports preferred
  • Passion for mental health and expanding access to care preferred
