About the role
- Design scalable, secure, and highly available cloud database solutions
- Choose appropriate database types (relational, NoSQL, etc.) and develop data models and schema designs
- Provision and configure cloud database instances (e.g., Amazon RDS, Azure SQL, Oracle Autonomous DB)
- Migrate on-premises databases to the cloud, ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime
- Plan and execute database upgrades
- Monitor database performance and identify/resolve bottlenecks; implement indexing, partitioning, and caching strategies
- Implement access controls, encryption, auditing, and ensure compliance with data protection regulations
- Set up automated backups and disaster recovery; configure replication, failover, and clustering
- Automate database provisioning and routine maintenance using Terraform, CloudFormation, scripting
- Collaborate with developers, DevOps, security specialists, product managers, and business analysts
- Troubleshoot database-related issues, provide technical support, and document environments and procedures
- Monitor and optimize database resource usage and recommend cost-saving measures
- Contribute to API solutions and platform management to improve veteran access to VA data and services
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Public Administration, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
- Hands-on experience with MySQL, Oracle, and Amazon RDS
- Strong ability to query, design, and architect databases for performance and scalability
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and cloud-native database services
- Familiarity with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or DynamoDB
- Proficiency in scripting and automation tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Bash, Python)
- Strong understanding of security, compliance, and data governance standards (e.g., HIPAA, HL7)
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
- Analytical mind and problem-solving aptitude
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance
- Strong organizational skills
- Preferred: Active VA Public Trust
- Preferred: Prior experience supporting federal agencies, especially the Department of Veterans Affairs
- Preferred: Familiarity with VA Lighthouse tools and infrastructure
- Preferred: Certifications in cloud technologies or database administration
- Preferred: Prior, successful experience working in a remote environment
