About the role

  • Analyze and interpret complex design requirements, including reference to various industry standards.
  • Apply creativity and resourcefulness to deploy both established best practices and develop non-traditional methods to satisfy novel project demands.
  • Develop CAD models, drawings, and documentation packages for all designs
  • Perform engineering analysis to guide design decisions and communicate that analysis to project leaders both verbally and through documentation.
  • Contribute to technical reviews and project status meetings as the technical design contributor and/or lead.
  • Assemble prototype units and develop assembly procedures for higher volume production.
  • Develop and execute test plans to evaluate mechanical sub-system performance.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing to incorporate DFM/DFA into design and supporting documentation
  • Other duties or projects as assigned

Requirements

  • General curiosity about system design, physics, or quantum mechanics
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an ABET accredited institution
  • 5+ years of experience in a professional, product-focused engineering role
  • Well-rounded background in core mechanical engineering principles and concepts
  • High level of skill using Solidworks 3D CAD tools for mechanical design
  • Understanding of ASTM E595 – how to choose materials for space
  • Experience building, simulating, verifying, and validating cubesat and/or space flight hardware designs
  • Experience with thermal or vibration analysis, simulation, and experimentation
  • Experience building proof-of-concept prototypes from the ground up, using 3D printing, off-the-shelf parts, and rapid prototype vendors
  • Experience in a lean, mid-volume manufacturing environment, including debugging design issues that arise in early pre-production
  • Experience with application of GD&T to engineering drawings
  • Demonstrated experience applying Design for Manufacturability and Assembly principles
  • Ability to visually see and focus on fine details of small components
  • Good verbal and written technical communication skills
