About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform routine, focused, and validation audits of professional coding across multiple specialties
- Evaluate coding accuracy, documentation support, compliance requirements, and reimbursement impact
- Review audit findings and provide clear, actionable feedback
- Monitor coding trends and identify quality improvement opportunities
- Track coding issues and trends and escalate them to the Team Lead or Manager
- Conduct root cause analysis on coding errors and recurring issues
- Track and report audit results, quality metrics, and performance trends
- Serve as a coding resource and mentor for coding staff
- Develop and deliver individual and group education sessions
- Assist with onboarding and training new coders
- Create educational materials, reference guides, and coding resources
- Serve as the primary coding subject matter expert for assigned clients
- Participate in client meetings and provide guidance on coding, documentation, and compliance questions
- Research complex coding scenarios and communicate recommendations
- Assist leadership with coding policy development and implementation
- Support production coding during increased volume, staffing shortages, or operational needs
- Complete coding work queues accurately and efficiently
- Review coding-related denials and identify opportunities for appeal or correction
- Partner with coding, revenue cycle, and operations teams to reduce denial trends
- Assist with payer audit responses and documentation reviews
- Stay current on coding regulations, industry updates, and payer changes
- Participate in internal and external audits
- Recommend process improvements
- Support special projects, client initiatives, and operational needs
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum 3–5 years of medical coding auditing experience
- Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and payer-specific guidelines
- Experience conducting coding audits and delivering audit feedback
- Ability to interpret medical documentation and apply accurate coding principles
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
