About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform laboratory testing and analyses according to specifications, procedures, and quality standards
- Manage laboratory processes, supplies, and equipment for timely, accurate, and cost-effective operations
- Develop, document, update, and maintain procedures for assigned scientific platforms
- Plan and prioritize short- and long-term laboratory activities
- Collaborate with industry and government partners and participate in cross-functional teams
- Develop client, grant, and internal funding proposals and prepare project updates and reports
- Lead small projects and direct assigned research staff and students
- Support laboratory safety requirements and identify improvement opportunities
- Contribute to scientific papers, presentations, and communications for meetings, stakeholders, and leadership
- Provide scientific advice to the IFSH Executive Director and researchers
- Contribute to IFSH strategic plans, grants, and goals
- Seek grant and project funding on a limited basis with supervisor support
- Supervise one exempt Research Scientist and provide direction to up to three students
- Maintain required security clearance and facility access requirements
Requirements
What you’ll need- M.S. in genomics, food science, engineering, or a related field with 5 or more years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. with 2 or more years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience with high-throughput sequencing (HTS), whole genome sequencing (WGS), genome data management, and related laboratory techniques
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and respond to complex issues
- Ability to proactively identify solutions
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, genome analysis tools, and relevant coding applications
- Strong attention to detail in research and scientific documentation
- Strong scientific writing, communication, organizational, and laboratory management skills
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Must satisfy and maintain applicable security clearance and access requirements for a secure research facility
- Ability to operate laboratory instrumentation, including pipettors
- Ability to walk for up to 50% of the workday
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds
