About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Handle highly complex exposure claims under Claim Guidelines
  • Direct and manage independent investigators, appraisers, and experts
  • Select, direct, and manage defense counsel, including approval of budgets
  • Develop litigation and file disposition strategies
  • Attend mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as needed
  • Report to reinsurers according to reporting guidelines
  • Assist senior claim specialists with claim issue analysis
  • Verify and analyze coverage applicable to reported losses
  • Establish 24-hour contact and maintain appropriate stakeholder contact throughout the claim
  • Investigate claims through information gathering, interviews, statements, website research, and review of reports and bills
  • Identify and address subrogation, contribution, and SIU opportunities
  • Set accurate and timely loss and expense reserves
  • Evaluate, negotiate, and authorize settlements within designated authority
  • Negotiate directly with claimants and claimant attorneys
  • Draft correspondence, including coverage letters
  • Maintain resident and nonresident adjuster licenses as required
  • Provide ongoing technical training and development for the discipline
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 12 years of claims handling experience in the insurance industry, or high school diploma and 16 years of relevant experience
  • Extensive experience handling commercial and homeowners’ property claims
  • At least 5 years of large loss property claims experience involving exposures of $250,000 or more
  • Advanced technical knowledge, including estimating skills using Xactimate and Cotality
  • Excellent coverage analysis skills and experience drafting coverage position correspondence
  • Experience handling litigated files and directing defense counsel
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Ability to travel 50%
  • Licensure as required by respective state(s)
  • Ability to analyze data, use sound judgment, draw conclusions, and make supported decisions
  • Authorized to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • CPCU and other insurance-related studies preferred
