About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build and maintain LLM-powered features, including retrieval-augmented generation systems, structured prompt pipelines, and intelligent workflow automation for clinical settings
  • Implement and iterate on evaluation frameworks measuring accuracy, safety, and reliability of production AI outputs
  • Monitor deployed models and contribute to quality improvement
  • Build Python- or TypeScript-based backend services exposing AI capabilities through REST, GraphQL APIs, and WebSockets
  • Contribute to AI infrastructure design, deployment automation, and operational tooling
  • Ensure systems meet HIPAA standards and protected health information is handled appropriately
  • Standardize software quality assurance procedures
  • Oversee testing and debugging and develop fixes
  • Research complaints and resolve complex software-related issues
  • Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, and technical design sessions
  • Help establish and uphold engineering standards in a new, growing team
  • Make technical approach decisions for project components with considerable autonomy

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years building production AI/ML systems
  • Hands-on experience with large language models and orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex
  • Proficiency in Python, TypeScript, and ML libraries such as Hugging Face, PyTorch, or scikit-learn
  • Experience building REST or GraphQL APIs serving AI/ML model outputs
  • Understanding of retrieval-augmented generation pipeline design and vector databases
  • Experience building custom LLM and agent evaluations, including automated testing of model outputs, agent trajectories, and failure modes
  • Awareness of HIPAA requirements and secure handling of sensitive health data
  • Ability to work autonomously with strong judgment in a greenfield, ambiguous environment
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools and LLM coding harnesses such as Claude Code, Pi Agent, Cursor, or Codex
  • Experience fine-tuning or systematically evaluating foundation models
  • Familiarity with multi-agent AI architectures, agent orchestration frameworks, and sandboxed code execution environments
  • Exposure to clinical data, EHR systems, FHIR standards, or healthcare AI applications
  • Familiarity with TypeScript and Next.js
  • Experience in a 0-to-1 product build or early-stage engineering environment
  • Understanding of Humana's enterprise AI governance and responsible AI standards
  • Must live close to one of Humana's designated IT locations
