About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Obtain and enter accurate patient demographic and insurance information in the EHR
  • Perform cashiering functions and collect co-payments, deductibles, co-insurance, and other required payments
  • Perform medical necessity checks for compliance with Medicare guidelines
  • Interview patients, family members, and physicians to obtain registration information
  • Ensure correct insurance plan codes are used for billing
  • Explain consent forms, obtain signatures, and answer questions professionally
  • Address patient issues and concerns and alert management to unusual or difficult situations
  • Protect patient health information according to HIPAA guidelines
  • Use patient identifiers to correctly identify patients and medical records
  • Meet departmental registration accuracy and productivity goals
  • Verify insurance and determine patients' out-of-pocket expenses
  • Offer payment options when applicable
  • Accurately post and receipt patient payments and balance the cash drawer daily
  • Organize work time, set priorities, and assist other team members
  • Suggest process improvements and support efficient patient flow
  • Pursue continual learning and adapt to changing demands

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma or equivalent education, such as GED, homeschool equivalency, or partial/full post-secondary education
  • Two years of experience in a strong customer service environment
  • One year of hospital registration experience preferred
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English
  • Knowledge of basic registration/access functions and insurance procedures
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to learn and navigate multiple software programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers
  • Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and handle detail work accurately and rapidly
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Ability to meet ongoing skills, competency, and performance assessments
  • Ability to comply with EMTALA, HIPAA, hospital, governmental, and healthcare licensing agency requirements
