About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Assist the staff pharmacist with ordering, stocking, storing, and dispensing prescription and non-prescription medications
Prepare Pill Line medication cards and unit-dose medications for Pyxis
Complete and maintain competency through the Pharmacy Competency Module
Maintain knowledge of the Bureau of Prisons Formulary and formulary changes
Maintain medication inventories in the main pharmacy, satellite camp, crash carts, emergency bags, and automated dispensing systems
Check for outdated medications, maintain narcotics counts, and maintain needle, syringe, and supply inventories
Audit the Night Stock cabinet or automated dispensing system and maintain stock records
Keep pharmacy areas clean and orderly according to safety and sanitation guidelines
Use the Bureau of Prisons electronic medical record and complete computer documentation
Schedule patients, prepare institutional call-outs, scan and file documents, type memoranda, answer telephones, and perform pharmacy clerical duties
Maintain technical computer knowledge related to pharmacy operations and operate medical equipment and automated systems
Participate in Improving Organizational Performance Data and Quality Assurance activities
Receive patients, explain procedures, submit reports and evaluations, and follow Bureau of Prisons and institutional health-services requirements
Maintain communication with the Clinical Director, Health Services Administrator, and Contracting Officer’s Representative
Maintain security awareness and professional relationships with inmates; report rule violations and requested inmate infractions
Attend the Institution Familiarization Orientation Program and comply with institutional safety, custody, conduct, identification, accountability, access, and Privacy Act requirements
Provide services for approximately 35 sessions per week and remain available for emergencies as necessary
Perform all duties according to accepted Pharmacy Technician standards, applicable Federal and State regulations, Joint Commission standards, and American Correctional Association standards

Requirements

What you’ll need

Completed a formal Pharmacy Technician Program
Satisfactorily completed an internship
At least one year of Pharmacy Technician experience
Current Basic Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification
Knowledge of Pharmacy Technician methods, techniques, and procedures
Knowledge of medical equipment and automated systems
Knowledge of safety principles and infection-control requirements in a patient-care environment
Ability to relate and deal effectively with physicians, peers, inmates, and others
Ability to recognize, report, and record changes in a patient’s physical or emotional condition
Ability to administer medication
Working knowledge of technical computer systems related to pharmacy operations
Must attend the Institution Familiarization Orientation Program before beginning institutional duties
Must comply with institutional safety, custody, conduct, identification, accountability, access, and Privacy Act requirements
Must sign in and out of the institution as required and wear the institution-issued identification badge
Must maintain institutional security awareness and report violations of institutional rules and regulations
Must wear appropriate professional attire; khaki or green clothing is prohibited
Must be available Monday through Friday for approximately 35 sessions per week, normally between 6:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., with schedule flexibility and emergency availability
May be required to submit to tuberculosis or other communicable-disease testing or provide acceptable evidence of testing or immunity
Must immediately report adverse regulatory actions involving Pharmacy Technician certification or licensure
Must not supervise inmates or Bureau of Prisons staff, participate in inmate accountability, formulate policy, attend restricted meetings or functions, or perform duties outside the Statement of Work
Experience working in a correctional environment is preferred but not required
Documentation of education, training, experience, and qualifications must be provided as required
