About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.
- Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
- Develop technical work instructions for O41 Plant Engineering on Facilities’ mechanical systems, utility systems, process piping, fire protection/life safety systems, production equipment, construction and repair specifications/requirements, etc.
- Provide on-site support to internal and external customers on mechanical-related matters to ensure inspections, routine maintenance, and construction projects are performed in accordance with applicable codes and NNS-specific specifications/requirements
- Perform mechanical evaluations, conduct building/infrastructure assessments and respond to emergent safety related issues in a fast paced, large industrial facility setting.
- Perform troubleshooting and provide resolution to issues with mechanical systems, utility systems and fire protection systems while keeping safety at the forefront.
- Direct work assignments of consultants and contractors to ensure shipyard facilities are maintained in a safe condition.
- Support design reviews of contractor project submittals to ensure that proper design, installation and commissioning is accomplished while complying to applicable codes, regulations and best practices
- Review studies and make recommendations supporting the development of the Facilities’ Long Range Strategic Plan (LRSP) for critical systems and equipment.
- Perform field inspections of critical equipment and assets.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience
- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) in the mechanical disciplines is preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to build strong working relationships and rapport with NNS production, engineering, safety, maintenance, and contractor personnel
- Knowledge of pertinent Building Codes, Virginia Codes, NFPA Standards/Codes, ASHRAE Recommendations, and OSHA regulations
- Experience with heavy industrial facilities
- Ability to gain and maintain a Confidential level security clearance
- AutoCAD and Inventor experience
