About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems
Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines
Evaluates and resolves engineering related production problems related to manufacturing, design, quality and material engineering
Analyzes engineering specifications and drawings; confers with quality, material, manufacturing and subcontractors to provide and obtain technical information
Investigates reports of defective, damaged or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment or systems; and reviews production schedules and orders
Examines, measures, inspects or tests defective parts for conformance
Evaluates findings to formulate corrective actions
This position supports department E86 Nuclear Propulsion - Construction and Process Engineering
Provides hands-on waterfront support, manufacturing engineering support and oversight for the construction and final assembly of the Reactor Plant and supporting systems

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
Experience with Microsoft Office Programs
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Problem solving, critical thinking, and technical writing
Ship check and familiarization with NNS construction processes
