About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems
  • Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines
  • Evaluates and resolves engineering related production problems related to manufacturing, design, quality and material engineering
  • Analyzes engineering specifications and drawings; confers with quality, material, manufacturing and subcontractors to provide and obtain technical information
  • Investigates reports of defective, damaged or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment or systems; and reviews production schedules and orders
  • Examines, measures, inspects or tests defective parts for conformance
  • Evaluates findings to formulate corrective actions
  • This position supports department E86 Nuclear Propulsion - Construction and Process Engineering
  • Provides hands-on waterfront support, manufacturing engineering support and oversight for the construction and final assembly of the Reactor Plant and supporting systems

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Programs
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Problem solving, critical thinking, and technical writing
  • Ship check and familiarization with NNS construction processes
