About the role

  • Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems.
  • Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes.
  • Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications.
  • Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications.
  • May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.
  • This position is intended for the procedures team within the Coatings Technology and Materials Engineering Department.
  • The individual will work with senior engineers to develop procedures for coatings and surface treatment commodities.
  • Procedure development will involve research into existing specifications, drawings, applicable procedures, and other reference material.
  • In addition, they will interface with craft workers at their job locations either as part of research, problem resolution, or evaluation.
  • Ability to write for different audiences, think critically and logically, take input from other engineers and craft persons, and maintain technical rigor is required.
  • The individual may also need to support other processes such as tool, material, or record management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Sciences, or a similar field.
  • Proficient at technical writing and research.
  • Knowledgeable in surface cleanliness, preparation, coating application, corrosion, or similar processes and subjects.
  • Familiar with industrial manufacturing practices and environments.
  • Familiar with managing or being a part of complex projects.
  • Can work complex tasks autonomously or when collaborating with a team.
