About the role

  • Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy
  • Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines
  • function as an R&D Project Lead and/or R&D Program Lead
  • represent the organization as the prime technical and/or R&D program contact for a given area
  • perform and coordinate interdepartmental and/or external research efforts and/or project management activities
  • Responsible for project execution including project plans, technical reviews, test plan development, evaluation and analysis of results, communication, internal/external customer briefings, and various other R&D related activities
  • develop and review technical products as well as perform project management activities
  • Technology development and research in various emergent fields is expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Practical experience in production areas supporting CVNs, VCS, or CLB
  • Experience with robotics and automation, inclusive of programming and implementation
  • Extensive engineering knowledge attained through either new construction engineering (Carrier and/ Submarine) and/or overhaul engineering (Carrier and/or Submarine)
  • Waterfront engineering and/or waterfront experience is beneficial
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to clearly present technical approaches and findings
  • Demonstrated technical leadership capability and the ability to mentor junior engineers and/or brief upper management
  • Previous experience performing technical work and/or project execution of emerging technologies, process development, test plan development, R&D, materials analysis, technical scouting, and/or complex technical analyses
  • Professional engineering licensure and/or master’s degree in technical field (ME, Marine Engineering, Aerospace, etc.) is preferred.
