About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Join HighLevel’s Quality Engineering function as a Software Development Engineer in Test Apprentice
- Work on real testing and automation initiatives that contribute directly to product quality
- Work alongside experienced SDETs and software engineers
- Develop practical knowledge of automation frameworks, API testing, defect analysis, CI/CD processes, and software quality practices
- Work on a team with a defined charter, potentially involving Go domain services, ledger and accounting, payments infrastructure, document rendering, or developer tooling and MCP
- Write ADRs and review other engineers’ designs
- Own on-call context for shipped work
- Design, build, instrument, and ship a substantial platform component
- Present designs to the organization and defend tradeoffs
- Harden, migrate, and hand off work or extend into a second charter
- Participate in conversion discussions beginning around week 18
Requirements
What you’ll need- Completed a term in a recognized open source mentorship or contribution program, with merged and reviewed work in a real project
- Working fluency in Go, or demonstrated depth in another systems language plus evidence of rapid learning
- Comfort with distributed systems fundamentals, including idempotency, retries, and consistency models
- Familiarity with containers and Kubernetes, including debugging pod startup failures
- Habit of documenting design decisions in design docs, issue threads, and commit messages
- Graduation timeline allowing full-time conversion at the end of the term
- Sustained contribution to a single project across many months
- Public review threads demonstrating thoughtful technical discussion and willingness to change position
- Experience building systems handling money, correctness invariants, or multi-tenant isolation
- Conference talks, blog posts, or upstream specification proposals such as SEPs, KEPs, or RFCs
- Curiosity about the business problem underlying assigned work
