About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design and typeset 4-color lifestyle, cookbook, children’s, and gift book interiors
  • Work simultaneously on 12–20 projects according to the publishing cycle
  • Collaborate with editorial, production, and art directors from design concept through typesetting proofs and print-ready files
  • Take initiative to problem-solve, troubleshoot, and follow through to meet deadlines
  • Manage projects and report progress
  • Manipulate and color-correct photos and illustrations
  • Create graphs and charts as needed
  • Perform pre-press operations and prepare print-ready PDFs for printers
  • Collect project files and documents and archive them according to established procedures
  • Repurpose existing content and make reprint corrections

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Online portfolio required for consideration
  • Expert Macintosh computer skills
  • Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud Suite programs
  • Strong knowledge of typography, including paragraph, character, object, and GREP styles
  • Knowledge of book structural elements and proofreading marks
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience designing and typesetting book interiors for publishing or a similar high-volume production environment
  • Professional experience designing and laying out long-form book interiors
  • BA from a respected institution in a Design field, especially interior book design and typography
  • Understanding of printing and binding processes
  • Strong knowledge of Trade Book design and current trends
  • Comprehensive knowledge of long-document production in InDesign
  • High-level skill with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator on Mac OS
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and set appropriate priorities
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work quickly, accurately, and efficiently
  • Analytical, detail-oriented, well-organized, and proactive
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
