About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design, build, and test systems for employer and employee tax accounts, including agency registrations, power-of-attorney and third-party authorizations, tax notices, agency filings, and state/federal/employee tax setup
  • Build automation that requests and maintains access with tax agencies on customers' behalf
  • Develop bots, data exchanges, and agency-event pipelines to keep accounts, rates, and deposit schedules accurate and prevent failed filings
  • Model jurisdiction-specific compliance rules into maintainable systems
  • Own reliability, performance, and correctness in a complex compliance domain
  • Partner with Product, Design, Tax Operations, and PEO teams to turn customer and compliance pain into solutions
  • Prototype, iterate, and launch products
  • Mentor engineers and help solve difficult large-scale technical problems
  • Build products customers love

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Significant software-development experience, typically 8+ years, with demonstrated staff-level technical leadership
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and make measurable customer impact at scale
  • Experience building scalable solutions that eliminate customer pain, with ownership of reliability, performance, and correctness
  • Ability to design data models and APIs for a complex, rules-heavy domain such as compliance, tax, payments, or similar
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new capabilities
  • Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks
  • Ability to mentor engineers
  • Ability to communicate effectively across engineering teams and with business stakeholders
  • Experience in or interest in Ruby on Rails (nice to have)
  • Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment (nice to have)
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code (nice to have)
  • Travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required
  • Secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection required when working from an approved non-office location
