About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage an initial team of 3 designers and hire to build the team
  • Build rituals, hiring pipeline, and planning cadence across Consumer Banking and Business Banking
  • Coach designers working on both the established Wallet product and the 0-to-1 SMB Banking effort
  • Co-create goals and success metrics with product and engineering partners
  • Translate strategy into clear scopes, sequences, and milestones
  • Raise quality standards through critique and review
  • Stay hands-on with high-stakes design decisions, especially SMB Banking’s path to beta
  • Partner with Banking’s PM and engineering leads, plus Risk, Compliance, Legal, Data, and Ops
  • Ensure Banking products fit cohesively into Gusto’s broader financial ecosystem
  • Coordinate with design and product counterparts on adjacent pods such as Accounting and Payments
  • Build individualized career development plans for direct reports
  • Represent Banking’s design needs to senior design leadership

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 10+ years of product design experience
  • 4+ years of people management experience, ideally with senior designers or higher
  • Established manager with prior player-coach experience
  • Experience managing designers across products at different stages ideally
  • Portfolio and management track record showing high-quality work in consumer or business financial products; fintech, banking, or financial platforms strongly preferred
  • Experience partnering with Risk, Compliance, or Legal on regulated financial products is a strong plus
  • Experience incorporating AI tools and practices into how a whole design team works
  • Ability to work from a Gusto office on designated days approximately 2–3 days per week when based in Denver, San Francisco, or New York City
  • Secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection when approved to work from a non-office location
