About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Review clinical documentation and diagnostic results to extract data and assign ICD-10 diagnosis codes and CPT/HCPCS codes
  • Code surgical, General Surgery, and Trauma Surgery charts as assigned
  • Code conditions and procedures according to ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines, CMS/MAC rules, CPT rules, and other mandated coding standards
  • Review payer coding-related denials and recommend appropriate claim-resolution actions
  • Ensure all documented services are coded accurately and obtain appropriate documentation when needed
  • Maintain 95% coding accuracy and productivity
  • Work the review queue daily and communicate corrections and re-bill requirements to facilities
  • Code or pend every chart in the queue within 24 hours
  • Provide answers to physician and hospital coding or billing questions within eight hours
  • Work with IQC staff and facility coding and billing teams to meet quality, efficiency, and reimbursement standards
  • Communicate coding discrepancies and problems to supervisors
  • Check the Guidehouse email system at least every two hours during coding sessions
  • Maintain HIPAA-compliant workstations and follow coding division policies and procedures

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in medical coding
  • 3+ years of vascular surgery coding experience, including inpatient and outpatient coding for physician claims
  • CPC certification from AAPC
  • EMR experience
  • Must maintain current professional credentials throughout employment
  • Ability to work independently and multitask
  • Ability to interface with all levels of personnel and clients
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • High level of accuracy
  • Strong working knowledge and experience with federal and state coding regulations and guidelines
  • CCVT and/or CIRCC credential from AAPC preferred
  • Experience with multiple EMR and/or practice management systems preferred
