About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Evaluate and underwrite new and renewal business according to Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite
  • Develop and implement risk assessment models for coverage, pricing, and terms decisions
  • Collaborate with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients to obtain information and provide guidance
  • Procure and analyze supplementary reports and screenings, including motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, and external inspections
  • Document underwriting decisions and ensure compliance with state and federal insurance regulations
  • Evaluate complex policy renewals and modifications, identifying policy enhancement and risk mitigation opportunities
  • Communicate underwriting strategies and decisions to internal teams, agents, and brokers
  • Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions
  • Maintain relationships with internal and external customers and coworkers to generate new business and retain profitable business
  • Monitor underwriting practices and assist with strategic adjustments
  • May oversee performance and coaching of staff and participate in talent selection, development, and performance management for direct reports
  • Provide technical advice and support to lower-level positions
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related field or equivalent experience
  • Generally, a minimum of 9 years of experience in Underwriting or a related field
  • Completion of or continuing progress toward a professional designation preferred, such as AU, CPCU, CIC, INS, ARM, or a marketing designation
  • Advanced knowledge of company policies and industry laws and regulations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Advanced analytical, risk assessment, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong negotiation and decision-making ability
  • Familiarity with marketing strategies and tools is beneficial
  • Performs work under limited supervision and technical direction
  • Works with significant latitude and authority on complex assignments
  • Position requires occasional travel
