About the role
- Senior Front-end Engineer building government digital services for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to help Veterans manage VA debts.
- Build, refactor, and maintain React components and services with an emphasis on modular, scalable design.
- Design and maintain automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests using frameworks such as Cypress.
- Incorporate accessibility (Section 508, WCAG 2.1AA) and US Web Design System standards into development.
- Apply DevOps practices (CI/CD, monitoring, cloud services) to ensure reliable delivery and operations.
- Contribute as part of an Agile team: backlog refinement, user story acceptance criteria, story sizing, code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
- Fully remote position within the United States.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience on the job plus 8+ years of experience as a software engineer (Or commensurate experience).
- 3+ years of production experience with React.js.
- Demonstrated experience maintaining and enhancing applications with modern JavaScript frameworks, a component-based design system, and REST APIs.
- Experience with DevOps processes and tools (CI/CD, monitoring, automation).
- Experience writing automated tests and building testable code (unit, integration, end-to-end).
- Experience in cloud environments (AWS or equivalent).
- Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
- Preferred: Experience with Ruby on Rails and SQL.
- Preferred: Familiarity with latest React features (hooks, context API).
- Preferred: Experience with Sidekiq or other job managers.
- Preferred: Familiarity with AWS monitoring tools, Sentry, or Datadog.
- Preferred: Experience with PostgresDB and Redis.
- Preferred: Experience with RJSF library generation.
- Preferred: Working knowledge of USDS playbook and VA Digital Services Handbook.
- Preferred: Experience with continuous integration/deployment systems (Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
- Preferred: Familiarity with US Web Design System.
- Preferred: Familiarity with Section 508 and WCAG 2.1AA accessibility standards and testing tools.
- Preferred: Familiarity with AI development tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude-Code).
- Preferred: Contributions to open-source projects.
- Preferred: Experience working in or with government agencies, especially VA.
