About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Strengthening GMHC’s external profile through earned media, executive visibility, and strategic external communications.
  • Developing and executing earned media and external communications strategies.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with journalists and media professionals.
  • Drafting and editing press releases and media advisories.
  • Preparing executives and subject matter experts for public engagement.
  • Identifying speaking engagements and thought leadership opportunities.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional experience in communications, public relations, media relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success securing meaningful earned media coverage across traditional and emerging platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of the current and evolving media landscape.
  • Advanced writing, editing, proofreading, and message-development skills.
  • Experience preparing executives for interviews and external appearances.
  • Strong editorial judgment, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and effective collaboration across departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop inclusive and culturally responsive communications.
  • Preferred experience developing communications for nonprofit, healthcare, public health, HIV services, LGBT advocacy, or social justice initiatives.
  • Established relationships with relevant media professionals.
