About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Monitor and ensure proper management of facility environmental compliance across Indiana and Michigan
  • Coordinate permitting, sampling, reporting, and recordkeeping functions for regulated facilities through SEMS
  • Maintain compliance with solid waste programs, permits, and special waste/non-conforming waste requirements
  • Coordinate stormwater, SPCC, SWPPP, groundwater, drinking water, and wastewater sampling, analysis, reporting, and permitting
  • Support air permitting and compliance programs, including odor, emissions, and methane programs
  • Routinely inspect facilities and coordinate corrective action planning and operations training
  • Manage new permits, permit renewals, and permit modifications with operations, consultants, laboratories, and regulatory agencies
  • Attend regulatory meetings, public hearings, and community engagement activities as needed
  • Coordinate closure and post-closure activities with operations, legal, risk management, and consultants
  • Maintain permits, records, compliance tasks, and environmental events in SEMS
  • Provide operations updates on environmental compliance KPIs
  • Support development of compliance programs, best management practices, standard work instructions, company policies, and programs
  • Support environmental compliance and permit functions during new acquisition integration
  • Manage non-compliance communications, notices of violation, follow-up reporting, leadership communications, and corrective action planning
  • Lead compliance-related written and oral communications with external agencies
  • Provide technical information, training, and support for special projects and key projects
  • Act as the regional subject matter expert on environmental compliance and permitting
  • Monitor and communicate regulatory, guidance, and policy changes affecting operations
  • Provide technical support in internal and external meetings
  • Identify compliance risks and use internal controls to manage operational, legal, EHS, and compliance risks
  • Report issues to leadership
  • Provide technical review of projects and recommend improvements to safety, design, construction, quality, regulatory compliance, and fiscal responsibility
  • Work indoors in an office or home office approximately 40% of the time and outdoors at operational facilities the remainder of the time

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 4-year degree in natural sciences, environmental management, or related field
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive field experience in environmental management, compliance, and permitting in a multi-facility environment
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and applicable state regulations, laws, and policies, including RCRA, CERCLA, CWA/NPDES, CAA/Title V, SPCC, NSPS, EPCRA, and UST
  • Established agency relationships are preferred
  • General working knowledge of safety is beneficial
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Advanced computer skills with proficiency and working knowledge in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Ability to work with environmental management software systems, including Safety Environmental Management System
  • Exposure to Google working systems is beneficial
  • Capability to handle multiple tasks and competing demands to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
  • Ability to develop processes and procedures and initiate tasks related to job requirements
  • Ability to learn quickly and work well under pressure with constant reprioritization
