About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of mainframe software engineers
  • Own end-to-end delivery for a portfolio of mainframe applications across GM business value streams
  • Translate business priorities into an engineering roadmap and maintain the backlog
  • Balance new features, technical debt, and modernization work
  • Provide technical direction on mainframe design patterns, data models, performance tuning, and system integration
  • Drive adoption of Git-based workflows, code review standards, CI/CD automation, test automation, and repeatable validation
  • Champion secure and thoughtful use of AI in the engineering lifecycle
  • Partner with platform, SRE, and security teams on availability, observability, compliance, and operational excellence
  • Use engineering metrics to guide decisions and continuously improve team processes
  • Represent the team with product, business, and leadership stakeholders, communicating status, risks, and trade-offs
  • Support GM’s mainframe ecosystem modernization toward an automated and AI-enabled software factory

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 10+ years of experience delivering and supporting mainframe solutions in a large enterprise environment
  • Strong technical background with PL/I and/or COBOL, JCL, IMS (TM/DB), Db2 (or similar), and scheduling solutions such as IWS and CA7
  • 2+ years of software engineering manager experience and/or 7+ years of technical lead experience, including coaching, performance management, and team building
  • Proven experience leading cross-functional delivery efforts with business, architecture, operations, and vendors
  • Hands-on experience with Agile delivery (Scrum or Kanban), incremental releases, code review, and automated testing
  • Practical experience with Git-based source control, preferably GitHub, and CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps
  • Ability to operate in a hybrid environment integrating mainframe, distributed, and cloud applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future
  • Must be willing to report to Warren, MI or Austin, TX at least three times per week
  • Willingness to travel less than 25%
