About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Execute mechanical design of displays per program timing, leading to successful launch of the product.
- Using GM Studio theme (i.e., A-surface) as the guide, design mechanical components including castings, injection moldings, stampings, seals, PCBA mounts, adhesives, connector interface and fastening, etc.
- Perform design calculations, GD&T and tolerance stacks.
- Perform optimum material selection for specific applications within the display and for their interface to the vehicle (IP & Console, for example), using GM best practices and Materials Engineering as a partner in this selection.
- Create 3D CAD, 2D CAD & lead CAD reviews with stakeholders.
- Develop analysis and test plan for new design, perform proof of concept tests and analysis.
- Lead prototyping and testing, analyze test data, and make necessary adjustments to mechanical designs.
- Work with electrical engineers and PCBA designers to integrate components into electro-mechanical systems.
- Support root cause analysis and solution development based on virtual and/or physical test results.
- Build partnerships with functional peers internally within GM and externally at Tier 1 suppliers to align on display design per development cycles.
- Develop virtualization technologies that help accelerate and de-risk product development.
- Communicate design progress and risks to stakeholders and customers.
- Drive mechanical design strategy for the enterprise.
- Solid organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Requirements
What you’ll need- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree
- 10+ years of engineering experience in design and development of styled electronics and/or appearance grade injection molding, plating and casting.
- Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (NX and Teamcenter are the tools required to execute GM projects), 2D drawings, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and assembly.
- Strong analytical skills and engineering fundamentals in solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, and manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience engaging with display manufacturers.
