Engineering Group Manager – ME Body – Commodity
General MotorsEngineering Group Manager leading BIW engineering processes for vehicle programs at General Motors. Driving manufacturing strategy and overseeing tooling readiness and process development.
About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead a team of BIW engineers supporting GVDP milestones, tooling readiness, and process development for new and carryover programs.
- Drive manufacturing strategy, quality targets, and process standards for all BIW operations within your scope.
- Oversee creation, documentation, and implementation of standardized work, PFMEAs, process control plans, and error-proofing strategies to ensure safe, capable, and stable processes.
- Ensure on-time delivery of BIW tooling, tryout, and validation activities, including run-at-rate, capability studies, and launch readiness reviews.
- Provide regular status updates to leadership on program risk, readiness, and overall health, including mitigation plans for issue resolution.
- Champion design-for-manufacturing (DFM/DFA) by supporting cross-functional teams to resolve manufacturability issues early in the lifecycle.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Extensive experience in manufacturing or product engineering, preferably in BIW or closely related domains.
- People leadership experience (direct management of engineers, project leaders, or technical professionals).
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to evaluate complex assemblies, joining schemes, and fixture concepts.
- Demonstrated capability to collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including Design/Studio, Product Engineering, Plant ME, Quality, and Program Management.
- Proven ability to develop innovative engineering solutions to address challenging manufacturing constraints, timing pressures, and cost targets.
- Proficiency in reviewing 3D models, GD&T, and surface data to determine BIW feasibility, dimensional strategy, and manufacturing methods.
- Solid understanding of automation, joining technologies (e.g., spot weld, laser weld, structural adhesives, SPRs), and process capability (Cp/Cpk, variation reduction, error-proofing).
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or related) or equivalent experience.
- Must be fluent in English.
