About the role

  • Hybrid role supporting GM’s vision of a Zero Emission future by managing thermal performance and integration of electric drive systems.
  • Develop and release 1-D thermal models of electric drive components (motors, inverters, high-voltage connections).
  • Integrate component models into system-level simulations and represent thermal analysis in larger thermal design activities.
  • Perform thermal simulations to determine capability against requirements and support early architecture decisions.
  • Verify model predictions against test data; perform model correlation and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with CAE teams for higher-fidelity thermal and flow simulations where critical.
  • Calibrate motor and inverter temperature estimation algorithms for vehicle control software using component, subsystem, and vehicle test data.
  • Review and support vehicle and component level testing; compile and present simulation results to internal customers.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and competitive methods and products.
  • Travel as required (<10%).
  • Expected to report to Pontiac, Michigan three times per week (hybrid).

Requirements

  • BS in mechanical or electrical engineering or equivalent field
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience
  • Extensive knowledge in heat transfer and fluid mechanics principles
  • Strong experience with 1D thermal model development and simulation activities (e.g. GT thermal)
  • Experience with thermal testing/validation
  • Knowledge of electric motor and/or inverter design
  • Experience with Matlab, Simulink
  • Interpersonal skills to work cross functionally with multiple teams
  • Ability to create and present information to leadership, peers, customers and suppliers clearly and concisely
  • Fluency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Preferred: MS or Ph.D. in mechanical or electrical engineering or equivalent field
  • Preferred: 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • Preferred: Experience with modeling electric machine or inverter thermal performance
  • Preferred: Experience with automotive cooling system design and automotive electric drives
  • Preferred: Experience with commercial CAE software for heat transfer and flow simulations (StarCCM, Fluent, etc.)
  • Preferred: Experience with vehicle data acquisition systems (INCA, etc.)
  • Preferred: Experience developing software calibrations
